Adolph Shulz hailed from Delevan, WI and after studying under William Merit Chase in New York and studies abroad in both Paris and Munich, he returned to Delevan 1895 with his artist-wife, Ada Shulz. He began making trips to Brown County at the turn of the century and ultimately moved there in 1917. He had an ardent love for nature and found glory in the Brown County hills. Today’s work, Brown County Summer Landscape (our title) is a very representative Shulz landscape. It contains great depth and Shulz put a lot of attention into the near-field trees and played with that summer sun casting shadows throughout. The palette is hazy and soft – very much his trademark style. The painting is in very good condition with no in-painting and it’s housed in the likely-original, hand-carved frame. An exhibition size work from one of Brown County’s early painter/transplants.
