“Paul Turner Sargent was born on the Sargent family farm in tiny Hutton Township, IL (a few miles SE of Charleston, IL). He studied art at the Chicago Art Institute, completing that work in 1912, then returned to the family farm to paint full-time. He was extremely prolific, vowing to create a new piece every day, which he did for 30 years. Outside of the farm and surrounds, he often traveled to Brown County for subject matter, making his first trip in 1920. Sargent was a bachelor and remained on the family farm his entire life.
Today’s painting captures his output well. “The Old Dam” is an eastern Illinois summer stream that has appeared in many Sargent paintings."
