re: Alice Ross Hadley

Alice Ross was born in Indianapolis in 1854 and studied art at the Indiana School of Art, the Shinnecock Summer School of Art on Long Island, and the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis. During her time as a student, she studied with Barton S. Hays, Theodore C. Steele, William Merritt Chase, William Forsyth, and Brandt Steele. She was known primarily for her ceramic pieces, but she also painted many still lifes, particularly flowers. During her professional career, she participated in many group exhibitions in Indianapolis, primarily at the John Herron Art Institute. She also participated in the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, receiving an Honorable Mention for her work. In addition to her work as an artist, Alice taught ceramic decoration for nearly a decade at the John Herron Art Institute. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
