James L. Russell was an impressionistic New Albany, IN-area artist. Some of his pieces still adorn public buildings in New Albany. Painted with William Forsyth.

This following was submitted by a site visitor:

RUSSELL, JAMES L. Native of New Albany, Indiana, born October 10, 1872 of Irish ancestry, Early expression in art was as a stone cutter and sculptor. His work stands at the entrances of the old Carnegie Library now the Carnegie Center. He opened the Art Shop in New Albany in 1906, which became the gathering place for the artists of the area. His paintings are held in high esteem and he won many ribbons and awards in shows across the Midwest. Mr. Russell founded the Wonderland Way Art Club at his studio in New Albany, Indiana and at one time had over three hundred member artists. His paintings are in many prominent private collections nationwide and are in the collections of the New Albany High School, The New Albany-Floyd County Library, the Chicago Art Institute, Indiana Art Museum, Carnegie Center and the Speed Art Museum. Mr. Russell died May 12, 1937.
