They moved to Cincinnati by way of Canada, where Meakin stayed for the remainder of his life. He studied painting at the McMicken School of Design, the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and Later in Munich. He became a member of what is now called the “Ohio Valley School” which was influenced by German sources. This group also included members of the ‘Hoosier Group,’ of which Meakin was said to be a close friend. He is considered a great landscape painter but also worked in other mediums such as etching.
