Carey Cloud was an landscape painter, designer and illustrator who lived in Brown County from 1948 until his death in 1984. Self-taught, he became a commercial artist at a very young age. In later life he devoted himself the pursuit of art for its own sake. He was always something of an outsider among the Nashville, IN artists. The following information was submitted by a site visitor: C. Carey Cloud (1899-1984) was born just south of Warren, Indiana. He worked as a children's book illustrator, greeting card designer, and art director in Chicago before becoming a Cracker Jack prize designer. He moved to the village of Nashville in Brown County, Indiana, and became a leisure painter in 1947. He became noted for his attention to detail with paintings of weathered wood and Indiana Farm scenes. He was a guiding force in the planning and development of the Brown County Art Gallery Association's gallery building and was a three time President of the organization. He has exhibited works in many shows including the Hoosier Salon.
