re: Oakley E. Richey

Oakley Richey graduated from Herron and undertook additional studies at Grand Central School of Art and the Art Students League. Richey taught at Herron from 1924-1935 and then was an instructor at Arsenal Tech High School. The following was submitted by a site visitor: Oakley Richey was born in Hancock City, IN in 1902. He studied at the John Herron Art School, being one of the first to receive a diploma (Herron gave these from 1922-25 for 4 years of study) in 1924. His last year he was able to study in New York on a traveling scholarship, studying theater design. He immediately returned and taught at Herron, teaching the very first course in what he had just studied: all aspects of theater design, including stage sets and costumes. Always versatile, he taught many other fine art classes at Herron until 1936. He started teaching at Arsenal Tech in 1935, while winding down his instruction at Herron. By 1942, he was head of the art department. From 1947-51, he relinquished this position to spend more time with his own art and study, and in 1952, at the age of 50, he completed his Master's degree from Herron. He exhibited 5 times at the Hoosier Salon during this period, winning awards twice. In 1952, he picked up where he left off, becoming art dept. head at Arsenal Tech again, and held that position until the 1960's. He was also a lecturer at Indiana University. Mr. Richey died in 1971.
