Lawrence McConaha was born in Centerville, IN. As an adolescent in Richmond, McConaha took up an interest in drawing and painting. In 1933, following in the footsteps of Paul Gauguin, McConaha traveled to Tahiti, painted for three months, and returned with 115 paintings. Primarily known for landscapes but also produced portraits and still lifes. Active in various Indiana arts groups -- the Hoosier Salon, Indiana State Fair Annual Exhibition, The Richmond Art Association, etc. Some exhibition records outside the state (PAFA, Corcoran).
