Ruthven Byrum was born in Grand Junction, Michigan, on July 10, 1896 but lived most of his life in Anderson, IN. Byrum studied art at Indiana University under Robert E. Burke and T.C. Steele. After graduation in 1920, Byrum attended the Art Institute of Chicago for five years. He then Studied in Paris under Andre L'Hote, at the Julian and Chaumiere Academies and under Hans Hofman in Munich. Byrum was a member of the faculty of the normal school in Terre Haute, Indiana, and a member of the Anderson Society of Artists, serving on its board of directors. He was also a member of the Hoosier Salon, the American Artists Professional League and served as president of the Indiana Artists Club. He did not continue painting in the same style in which he did his first works, but continued to study throughout his career. Even though he was loyal to his academic training, Byrum did not ignore the modern school. In addition to settings in Indiana, Byrum is known to have used the Smoky Mountains as the subject of some of his landscape paintings. A frequent Hoosier Salon exhibitor between 1929 and 1957.
