Doel Reed was born in Logansport, IN and grew up in Indianapolis. He studied art at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He served in World War I, and was the victim of a gas attack, temporarily causing him loss of vision and a long hospitalization while in the service. He returned to the States and enjoyed a long teaching career at Oklahoma State University. Upon his retirement, he moved to Taos -- a locale where he spent many previous summers on vacation.
