Stanley S. Sessler was born of Russian parentage in 1905 and moved to U.S. when he was two years old. He studied at the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston and later came to Notre Dame in 1928, while beforehand doing postgraduate work and teaching at art school in Boston. He became a professor and the head of the department of fine arts at the University of Notre Dame. Further, he was a lecturer and used his own color slides to illustrate what he was speaking about. He also appeared on television for interviews and demonstrations. Among his many subjects were portraits, landscapes, still-lifes, religious subjects, and murals. Sessler was an elected member of the Chicago Galleries Association and an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Art in London, England in 1951. In 1954, he became a Fellow of the International Institute of Arts and Letters in Lindau-Bodensee, Germany. His work today can be found in public and private collections in 35 states, including Hawaii. A few of his more prominent exhibitions included: the Heritage Gallery of Chicago; the Philbrook Art Center of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and the Columbus Museum of Arts and Crafts of Columbus, Georgia.
