Michael Steele Churchman was born in Indianapolis and received a degree in civil engineering from Purdue University. He took up art after retiring from a long career in engineering and construction and over 40 years of running his own business. Churchman produced watercolor landscapes, often featuring barns set in his native Indiana. He also painted Florida landscapes, dock scenes and abstracts (the latter, typically in acrylic). Steele Churchman was very much involved with volunteer work on behalf of the Indianapolis Art Center (nee Indianapolis Art League) for over thirty years.
