Karl Martz was a chemistry student at Indiana University and was exposed to pottery in the 1930s through Griffith Pottery in Nashville, IN and some programs at Ohio State University. Upon graduation from IU in 1933, he moved to Nashville, IN working for Griffith and then establishing his own studio in 1935. Martz was hired as a ceramics instructor by IU in 1945, where he remained until his retirement in 1977. Martz's wife, Becky Brown was also a noted potter/ceramics artist.
