Derk Smit was born in the Netherlands in 1889. He emigrated to the United States in 1914 and settled in Chicago. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and the Chicago Art Institute before joining the U.S. military during World War 1. He returned to Chicago after the war where he opened an interior decorating company, in addition to continuing to pursue his painting. He was an active member of the Chicago Painters and Sculptors Association. Smit made frequent trips to Indiana and, in particular, to Brown County. He was a member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association, the Indiana Artists Club, and regularly displayed his work at the Hoosier Salon. Smit moved to southern California in the mid-1950s, settling in Laguna Beach. He continued to paint professionally and was a founding member of the Laguna Hills Art Association. He died in Santa Barbara on July 17, 1985. We're very interested in purchasing pieces by Derk Smit. If you have paintings you are considering selling, please contact us.
