Felrath Hines was born in Indianapolis and attended Herron as a youth. Upon graduation from high school he did a stint in the Civilian Conservation Corps and eventually moved to Chicago while studying at the Chicago Art Institute and worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. His education continued upon his move to New York in the 1940s where he attended both the Pratt Institute and New York University. While Hines painted throughout his career and his style evolved (becoming ever more abstract) -- most of his career was focused on painting conservation rather than original work.
