re: Lucie Hartrath

Lucie Hartrath was born in Boston in 1868. She was considered by many to be one of the most talented artists in the Chicago area in the early 20th century and was well known for her impressionist landscapes. She spent her childhood in Cleveland, Ohio and attended finishing school in Chicago. Lucie was a student of John Vanderpoel at the Chicago Art Institute from 1894-1895 and again in 1898. She studied at the Academi Colorossi in Paris from 1891-1894 and at the Normal Training School in Cleveland ca. 1895. She studied at the Art Students League in New York in 1896. Between 1898 and 1900 Hartrath went to Paris and studied in the ateliers of Rixens, Courtois and Collin. In 1901 she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Pennsylvania. She studied at the Damenakademie in Munich with Angelo Jank between 1906 and 1907. Between 1902 and 1904 Hartrath served as head of the Department of Drawing and Painting at Rockford College in Rockford, Illinois. In 1908 she established a studio in Chicago and rented a summer cabin in Nashville, Indiana. She used the Brown County hills as subject for her landscapes. In 1924 Hartrath was elected a member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. She was a founding member of the Chicago Women's Salon. She was also a member of the Chicago Society of Artists, the Chicago Watercolor Club, the Artists Guild of Chicago and the Chicago Galleries Association. She was a member of the Society of Western Artists where she participated in annual exhibitions in 1896-1897, 1902, and 1908-1910. She was a member of the American Women's Art Association of Paris and exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1901. Hartrath was a member of the Kunstlerinnen Verein, Munich and exhibited in Dusseldorf, Berlin and Munich between 1901 and 1902. Hartrath was a charter member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association in Nashville, Indiana and exhibited there in 1926, 1929 and 1939. She was a member of the Chicago Art Club and the Cordon Club Gallery exhibiting there in 1931 and 1935. She was a prizewinning member of the Municipal Art League of Chicago and also a Member of the Chicago Painters and Sculptors Association where she won gold in 1939. She also exhibited at the Tennessee Centennial and International Exhibition in Nashville in 1897 and the Cincinnati Museum of Art in 1904-1908. She exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1902-1904 and again in 1909 and 1919-1922. Hartrath exhibited at the Louisiana Purchase Exhibit in St. Louis in 1904 and the Pan Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. She exhibited at Indiana University in Bloomington in 1932. She exhibited at the Art Institute in Chicago in 45 annuals between 1895 and 1933 winning prizes in 1911, 1912, 1915 and 1916. She exhibited in the Hoosier Salon 1925-1941 winning prizes in 1925, 1927-1931, 1935, 1937, 1939 and 1941. Lucie Hartrath died in Chicago in 1962.
