re: Clotilde Embree Funk

Clotilde Embree was born in Princeton, Indiana in 1893. She studied art in Indianapolis, at the John Herron Art Institute, and in New York City at Cooper Union Art School, Art Students League, the National Academy of Design, Columbia University, and New York University. Her most notable instructors, though, were based in Indiana. While at Herron, Clotilde studied with William Forsyth and Clifton A. Wheeler. She also studied privately with Martha Slaymaker in Indianapolis. Clotilde worked as a commercial artist in New York City for many years, five of them in the art department of the New York Times. She returned to Indiana after marrying Claude Douglass Funk. She continued her commercial work as the original illustrator for Bobbs-Merrill's Childhood of Famous Americans book series. During the mid-20th century, she illustrated more than thirty children's books. After undergoing surgery for arthritis, Clotilde was forced to give up her pen-and-ink drawing for less strenuous painting. In addition to painting professionally, Clotilde taught at the Indianapolis Art League and the Jewish Community Center in Indianapolis. Source: Skirting the Issue, by Newton and Weiss
