Nelle Merrill was born in 1888 is Yankeetown, Indiana. She studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. and the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis. Her instructors included Edmund C. Messer, William Forsyth, Clifton A. Wheeler, and Tempe Tice. Nelle worked in oil, focusing on landscape subjects. Although she rarely exhibited her work, Nelle was actively involved, as a teacher, in art and music communities throughout southern Indiana, including the town of Nashville.
