Marie Childs Todd was born in Indianapolis in 1871 and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the John Herron Art Institute, and the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Her instructors included John H. Vanderpoel, T.C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams, Charles W. Hawthorne, and Charles H. Woodbury. Marie participated in numerous solo and group shows in Indianapolis throughout her life, and her work is in the permanent collection of the Indiana State Museum and the Indianapolis Public Schools. She was a well-known instructor in Indianapolis, spending much of her professional life teaching art at Shortridge High School, in addition to teaching grade school drawing for teachers at the John Herron Art Institute. Marie was also known for her wood carving abilities, and wrote an article describing her carving techniques and teaching methods for the national Industrial Education Magazine.
