Gaines Ruger Donoho's father was killed in the Civil War and his mother and he moved to Washington, D.C. There he studied art through his youth and moved briefly to New York City to attend the Art Students League. In 1878 he moved to Paris where he stayed for about ten years and was a frequent exhibitor at the Paris Salon. He returned to New York in 1887 and eventually moved out to North Hampton on Long Island where he worked until his death. We're exceedingly interested in finding paintings by G. Ruger Donoho.
