Francis Chapin was born in Bristolville, OH in 1899. After earning a degree from Washington & Jefferson College, Chaping attended the Art Institute of Chicago. Chapin was well-known for his landscape and figure paintings of the area that surrounded his neighborhood in Chicago. He also painted similar scenes while traveling in Mexico, Europe, and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. His work was shown in a variety of illustrious institutions, including: the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Salon d'Automne in Paris. In addition to painting professionally, Chapin was also an accomplished art teacher. Over the course of his life, he taught at the Art Institute of Chicago, the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, and the University of Georgia.
