Jane E. Messick (1908-1986) was born in Columbus, Ohio, but lived in Indianapolis for 67 years. She received a BFA from Butler University and a Masters in Art Education from the Herron School of Art. After her schooling she continued to study painting with Elmer Taflinger, George Innes, Jerry Farnworth, Millard Sheets, and Doug Kingman. Messick was the president of the Indiana Artist Club from 1959-1960 and a member for over 50 years. She exhibited for many years at the Herron School of Art, Hoosier Salon, and the Indiana Artists Club. She also received honors for her 1962 watercolor Women in Mexico and the Julia Magill Starbuck Memorial Purchase prize from the Hoosier Salon. Messick retired from Shortridge High School in 1971 after 35 years of teaching art.
