re: Nathaniel Currier

The following information was submitted by a site visitor: Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He was apprenticed at the age of fifteen to John and William S. Pendleton of Boston, who were the first men to set up a lithographic establishment in the United States. Independently, he became successful depicting real fires that had occurred, like that on the steamboat Lexington. He later joined James Ives and went on to start their press, Currier and Ives. The pair went on to become the largest publisher of lithographs in the U.S. The prints became a part of middle class pop-culture until the advent of illustrated magazines and daguerreotypes.
