re: The Hoosier Group

The following information was submitted by a site visitor: The Hoosier Group consisted of five Indiana Impressionist painters working in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Artists included in the group were T.C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams, William Forsyth, Otto Stark and Richard Gruelle. They are primarily known for returning after studying abroad to paint renditions of the Indiana landscape. The group first received their name in 1894 when exhibiting their summer work at sculptor Lorado Taft’s studio in the Chicago Athenaeum Building. The Central Art Association published a pamphlet of reactions to the exhibit from “the Critical Triumvirate”. Titled “Five Hoosier Painters,” the text was selectively reprinted under the title The Arts two Years later. The leading author, Hamlin Garland, acclaimed the Indiana painters for painting a modern American art distinctly of the heartland.
