James Eccles was a Chicago banker and when he retired at age sixty, he furiously picked up the pace of his painting. Painting paired with his other retirement devotional – travel. The combination defines his legacy – many watercolors and oils from sojourns to Brown County, the Caribbean and the Far East. He’s known for his ‘high key’ (very bright) palette. Today’s piece, Smokies, reflects yet another travel destination. A simple composition featuring a hilltop cabin, Eccles was very liberal with the paint at the focal point (see detail image). This painting was exhibited at the 1962 Hoosier Salon and still carries the original tag, verso. It’s housed in the original hand-carved frame which was refinished some years ago. The frame and painting pair very nicely together. A nice, squarish piece with great a wonderful exhibition record.
