Born in Armernia (then the Ottoman Empire) to a family of rug merchants, Hovesep Pushman studied art at an early age including study abroad in Istanbul. Pushman's family emigrated to Chicago when he was eleven and he continued his studies. Pushman began teaching art at the young age of seventeen. His initial focus was figural portraits with a sprinkle of still lifes and landscapes. In 1921 we was working on a novel, allegorical, mystical, candlelit still life. His mentor Robert-Fleury remarked, “That painting is you”. The balance of his career was largely devoted to these allegorical works. There is an excellent online catalog raissone of Pushman’s works here: https://www.hovseppushman.net/. The site also contains a much more complete biography. We’re very interested in buying paintings by Hovsep Pushman. Please contact us if you have pieces you are considering selling.
