Harold Zisla was born and educated in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art with a major in painting and received a B.S. and an M.S. in art education from Case Western Reserve University. He moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1953 to work as an industrial designer. He then served as executive director of the South Bend Art Center (later the South Bend Museum of Art). In 1966 he joined the faculty of Indiana University South Bend where he taught painting, design, art appreciation and art history. He exhibited in solo and group shows and was a leader in the fine arts community giving lectures to community groups, appearing on public television, and supporting and mentoring fellow artists. Trained as a representational artist with a penchant for the human face and form, he made a dramatic transition to abstraction at age 55, pursuing the resulting possibilities and his cubistic tendencies for the next 30-plus years.
