Bessie Hendricks was born in Indianapolis in 1867. She studied at the Girls Classical School in Indianapolis, as well as the second Indiana School of Art and the John Herron Art Institute. Her instructors included Theodore C. Steele, William Forsyth, and J. Ottis Adams. Bessie worked in oil and watercolor, painting primarily landscapes. Her paintings were included in exhibitions in Indianapolis, Richmond, and St. Louis. She also worked as a children's instructor at the John Herron Art Institute from 1902-05, and was the art critic for the Indianapolis News from 1919-21.
