re: Elmer Taflinger

The following information was submitted by a site visitor: Elmer Taflinger (1891-1981) was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and attended Manual Training High School where he studied art under Otto Stark. He worked as a stage hand at the Murat theater and at English’s Opera House before moving to New York to study at the New York Art Students League. He left after 6 years to work under Broadway stage producer David Belasco. Upon leaving that job, he studied in Europe, and then returned to New York to study life drawing under George B Bridgeman. Some of Taflinger’s anatomy illustrations are published in his books. Tafliger was slightly paralyzed from diphtheria after his travels, and returned to Indianapolis. He taught at the Circle Art Academy and the Indianapolis Art League. He also worked in the studio of George and Evelynne Mess and taught life drawing privately for 40 years at 158 East 14th street. He designed several murals, the ruins at Holliday Park, and wrote the autobiography “Revolting Hoosier, A Modest Autobiography.”
