Genevieve Goth Graf was the younger sister of famous Indiana artist Marie Goth and was married to famous Indiana artist Carl Graf.
Born in Indianapolis, Genevieve initially set aside her budding artistic talent to manage the family’s finances and the health of her mother. She held the profession of Indianapolis schoolteacher to achieve such ends. She nurtured painting as hobby in her 30’s, and with her sister Marie Goth, developed an intimate relationship with Carl Graf and V.J. Cariani. The four traipsed around Brown County together. Eventually she and Carl got hitched.
Genevieve and Carl split their time between Indianapolis and Nashville, Genevieve teaching during the school year. She spent years juggling domestic and professional obligations with her real passion, painting. In 1937, she began exhibiting her work professionally, most notably at that year’s Hoosier Salon.
When Carl died in 1947, Genevieve relocated to Nashville (but still commuted to Indianapolis to teach!), and set up living with Marie. When she retired from teaching in 1956, she committed much more time to… the domestic duties of she and Marie’s Nashville home. Ever the caregiver…
Her painting developed slowly over the years but she was in full swing when she passed away unexpectedly at her Nashville home on December 21, 1961.
