Margaret Boroughs Adams, born in Austin, Texas in 1965, was the wife of portrait artist Wayman Adams and a mother of one. During her childhood years Margaret received drawing lessons from the best art teachers in Austin, and later, during her teenage years, received lessons in New York. Upon her return to Austin she opened an art school called the Barn Studio. In 1910 Margaret went to Florence, Italy, where she met her future husband, Wayman. They were eventually married in 1918 and from that point on for over two decades she put her artistic talent aside and devoted herself to her family. Much more outspoken than Wayman, she was her husband’s best and most vocal advocate, often commenting on his work at press releases and exhibitions. It wasn’t until 1935 that Margaret began painting and drawing again, starting with floral still lifes inspired by a trip to Mexico, where Wayman had taught a portrait-painting course. The couple opened the Old Mill Art School outside Elizabethtown, New York where Margaret oversaw the construction of a tearoom next to her husband’s studio. The school was open for lessons during the summer months. Margaret continued to paint until her death in 1965. She died a widow, having lost her husband Wayman in 1959.
