“Simon Baus studied under Otto Stark at Manual High School and under William Forsyth and J. Ottis Adams at Herron. He’d planned on attending Purdue to study engineering but instead opted for a career in the US Postal Service where he remained for 45 years. Despite working full time, Baus was an extraordinarily prolific painter over a career that spanned his entire adult life. He exhibited scores of times in the Hoosier Salon Annual Exhibition and was associated with seemingly all the touchstone events and personalities in 20th Century Indiana art. For the last few years we’ve been representing the Simon Baus artistic estate and have had many good pieces come to light for the first time.
Today’s paintings are the same in that respect – this is their market debut! A really strong painting. Midnight Drive (c. 1955) reflects a more ‘modern’ Baus doing hard edges and a slightly skewed perspective. Both are exhibition size works, conserved and nicely framed. And speaking plainly, they’re probably the last really good Baus pieces that we will bring to market." |

Today’s paintings are the same in that respect – this is their market debut! Inter-Urban (c. 1935) was created during Baus’ social realism phase of the 1930s. It’s a narrative and typically, full of figures and action. Old and young, women and men, black and white, many hats and unsafe travel conditions as that little girl commands the stage. A really strong painting."

This painting was featured in our 9/2/2022 weekly newsletter.
"Genevieve Goth Graf was married to Brown County artist Carl Graf and the sister of renown portraitist Marie Goth. She was a teacher in the Indianapolis Public School system and eventually moved to Brown County full time. Much of her output focused on floral still lifes. Bittersweet falls into that category (as well as featuring Brown County pottery) though the floral aspect is all but past tense. Excellent condition and rather large as her work goes."

Frank Vietor |
Croy's Creek |
|
---
Frank Vietor was from tiny Poland, IN (Clay County) and in 1942 enlisted in the army to serve in the war effort. Upon his return, he received his degree from Herron School of Art and spent several years as a commercial illustrator. He founded an advertising agency in the late 1950s where he worked the rest of his career. His fine art career could be summarized in one word: trains. As Vietor himself was said to say, ‘I paint traditional landscapes, most of which happen to have a train in them.’
Today’s painting, Croys Creek, is straight from that playbook and depicting a Clay County scene he may have experienced in his childhood. This is one of Vietors larger, more exhibition-minded paintings. We note it as acrylic but it could be casein as the media is somewhat toothy. The painting is in excellent condition and housed in the original artist-created frame, finished with museum glass.
