It’s a joy, working with beautiful art all day long. It’s a particular joy when a painting by T.C. Steele surfaces from private ownership seeking a nice home. Generally agreed to be the most important artist to have substantial, life-long association with Indiana art he really is the pinnacle of what we strive to do at Fine Estate. So it’s with great pride that today we offer a completely fresh and new-to-market landscape by Theodore Clement Steele. Painted in 1914, Brown County Road (our title) is a beautiful example of Steele’s powers – a back country Brown County lane being hit by the summer sun. The piece speaks for itself. It’s completely original with no inpainting. The canvas is in flawless condition with no cracking or crazing. It bears the Steele estate stamp, verso. Housed in the presumed original frame. The painting was cleaned and varnished last week. This painting was bought by the original purchasing family in c. 1930 and has been in their possession ever since. And now it has returned to Indiana and is seeking its next home. Enjoy!

You can’t figure the Indiana vintage art market sometimes… Months without seeing good available work by any given artist and then a run of pieces. We’ve had two beautiful T.C. Steele paintings come through our hands recently (both sold) and now a third that we are pleased to offer you today. To the Overlook (our title) is an outstanding example of Steele’s work. At 30" x 40" and housed in an original 6” Lieber frame, the piece is monumental on the wall. The work features a sun-touched Brown County road approaching a hilltop overlook and contains beautiful treatment of light and a distinct focus on the native foliage. It’s a cheerful and painterly piece full of detail showcasing Steele’s masterful abilities. The painting was conserved and relined, c. 1979. The work contains no in-painting and the paint is stable. It is housed in the original (and impressive) Lieber frame. Brown County art in its highest form, from its foremost practitioner. An absolute classic.
