William Thomas Turman | Saint Mary-of-the-Woods | This painting was featured in our weekly email on 3/26/15 along with the following gallery comments: William Turman was the long-time director of the art program at what is now Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN. In addition he was the board president for Swope Gallery in Terre Haute for several years. And see his bio (below) for more interesting info on his study of art. I’m always surprised how little of Turman’s work we see. Educator, exhibitor, museum director – he certainly stayed busy. St. Mary’s of the Woods is a cheerful example – an early Spring vista with the trees in bloom and St. Mary’s of the Woods providing a beautiful backdrop. This work was featured in the 2013 book Painting Indiana III -- Heritage of Place as a reference piece for Hoosier painting locations. In 2014, the painting toured with a moving exhibit of the works appearing in the book and was displayed throughout the State. The painting has been cleaned and is housed in its original frame. - Curt Churchman, Fine Estate Art | Oil on Board | Signed Lower Left | |
